Malawi’s peaceful transition from dictatorship toward democracy has consistently been beating the odds. This story is full of incredible and unbelievable turns and can serve as a beautiful example to remind all of us about the price of freedom and the courage of people who have sought it.

This story has proved three major paradigms wrong; it shows that:

  • Africans can bring change by themselves without the assistance and intervention by the West
  • Poor people in an impoverished nation have the capacity and will for change
  • Religions can work together (especially Christians and Muslims) to serve the needs of their people and spearhead a peaceful transformation.

This story incorporates all of these elements and represents one of the most amazing and unbelievable stories of political change in Africa and maybe even world-wide. However, this story is nearly forgotten and most of the 12 millions crisis-plagued Malawians have never heard about their remarkable historical achievements that brought them the political freedoms they have today.

It is vital for the people in Malawi to know the story of Beating the Odds in order to learn to cherish their own historical achievements and use them as a basis to build a better future.  For the rest of the world, Beating the Odds should serve as a living testimony to the values and costs of freedom and the human potential to peacefully bring change to corrupted political and social systems.

“The odds are long because democracy is bound to be fragile in an impoverished country where incomes are around 50 cents per person per day, or around $180 per person per year, and where the stresses of mass disease, famine, and climate shock are pervasive. Amazingly, the Malawians have done it, while the international community has largely stood by through all of this suffering.”
